Sombari Baba

(from "Deva Bhumi - the abode of Gods"):

Though Baba did not portray himself as a learned man, he was incredibly wise and could explain the most involved philosophies in a simple and straightforward way. Many learned men who came to him with questions about complicated things were often taken aback by seeing the direct and simple explanations he provided.

Once, Baba was at the Padampuri ashram and many learned men had gathered for darshan. While sitting there, they started discussing Vedanta. At one point, a heated discussion about God started among them. A sadhu by the name of Swami Parmanand tried to explain something to them, but they started arguing with him, too.

On hearing this, Baba came out of his kutiya and spoke to Swami Parmanand, “Swami, you are a detached being, why get involved in discussions with these clever learned people of the world?” Then addressing the others, Baba said, “I have been listening to you for some time, but none of you is able to make your point in the right way. Tell me, have any of you seen God?”

One by one, the men all replied “No Baba, we have not.”

“So,” Baba said, “When you haven’t seen God, how can you say anything about him? How can you insist that your point of view is right?”

The men realized their mistake and said, “Sorry Baba, we got carried away and were being egoistic. We have questions and try to pretend we have the answers for each other when in reality, we have no idea what we are talking about.”

Baba then smiled and explained the point to them in such a simple way that even a child would have been able to make sense of it.
