Baba Lokenath once chastised a devotee who ill-treated his wife and came to Baba and wanted to attain Brahma-Jnana (knowledge of God). Baba was furious. he said, "You disrespect and ill-treat the god at home, and here, you come to ask for Brahma Jnana! First, go and take care of the god at home."
Baba makes it clear that we have to first show our love and respect to people around us, and particularly, the members of the family. For they have come to you to collect your karmic debts, and if you fail to pay it off, you will never rise in spiritual light, that is the reason Baba chastised the devotee. Firstly you have to be a good husband, a good wife, a good mother, a good brother or sister, or child. That is the way to God-realization.
